Kalesa

Kalesa most commonly refers to a two-wheeled, horse-drawn carriage (from Spanish calesa) used in the Philippines. Introduced by the Spanish in the 1700s, it was the primary mode of public and private transport during the colonial era, vividly painted and decorated. Its use declined with motorized vehicles by the 1980s, and today kalesas survive mainly as tourist attractions in heritage sites like Vigan, Intramuros (Manila), and Laoag.  Variants include the smaller karomata, the larger freight/passenger karitela, and the four-wheeled karwahe.
